Assessment of Agricultural Production System in Relation to Organic Agriculture Production and Marketing of Agricultural Crops and NTFP Products in Karnali Province of Nepal.

Major Responsibilities and Deliverables
In order to further, produce the detailed report on the existing agricultural production system in relation to organic agriculture production and marketing systems and to provide some feasible strategies to enhance organic agriculture in the province, following outputs are expected to be achieved within the contract period:

1. Bibliographic database focusing to commercially viable and other potential agricultural crops including NTFPs and MAPs, national program and policy frameworks prepared.

Activities:
• Review of available literature and prepare bibliographic database in line with study framework.
• Review national policies, Act, regulations, plans and programs in relation to organic agriculture, legal framework related to land ownership, lease holding, land pooling and contract framing,
• Review available documents (national/international) to identify the strengths, potentials and critical gaps as well as best practices in the selected agricultural crops, NTFPs and MAPs.

2. Base line information on agriculture production, processing and marketing of agricultural products and organic agriculture products collected.

Activities:
• Prepare check list/semi-structured questionnaire (for Focused Group Discussion (FGD) and Key Informant Interview (KII) and get approval from FAO,
• Conduct pre-testing of the questionnaire; finalize incorporating the feedback and make copies for field survey.
• Form an expert team comprising, Team Leader, Agricultural Economist, Organic Agriculture Expert, NTFP Expert, Gender and Social Inclusion (GESI) Expert, Geographic Information System (GIS) Expert.
• Conduct participatory appraisal with FGD and KII to identify the existing production and productivity, growth potentials, market status (national and export), opportunities of organic agriculture and the gap to address the market demand.
• Conduct KII and case studies to identify field based strengths, best practices, major challenges and risk of organic agriculture.

3. Baseline information on agriculture support services (agricultural inputs, technology, know-how, research, human resource, education and extension mechanism) in relation to organic agriculture production system collected.

Activities:
• Identify the current status of organic agriculture support services (institutions, production technology and inputs supply, research and development, human resources) available at local, provincial and national level through FGD and KII.

4. GIS site maps with potential production area and commodities prepared

Activities:
• Identify priority crops like apple, walnut, beans, vegetable seeds, NTFPs and MAPs.
• Specify agro climatic requirements of priority crops
• Prepare GIS map of the priority crops

5. Survey result shared at provincial and national level

Activities:
• Identify potential stakeholders
• Organise workshop to share/validate survey result with concern stakeholders at provincial and national level

6. Total Project Cost: NPR 2,420,000 plus 13% VAT
